A plea for perspective

I believe credit for pairing these two headlines goes to Suzepie at Reddit.

  1. Most of the coverage I've seen of that cruise was tongue-in-cheek, fortunately. It still makes me want to slap people, though.

  2. Those people on the cruise ship look malnourished.

Unbelievable, really; how do those people feel like they were ever in danger. Poor them, they can afford a cruise and had to be cold. Did you hear how fast food was taken to them?! I've never gotten an ambulance that quickly. How this is news is beyond me.

  3. You can read the first hand account from the Cruise Director, John Heald, on his blog (Google if you're interested). He puts the situation on the ship in perspective, and even manages to say that most of the guests aboard were really pleasant to deal with, under the circumstances.

That all said, from my one experience on a cruise ship (that I'm not in any hurry to repeat), there were almost certainly people complaining every step of the way over the most inane things.

  4. You know what? The people on the ship probably did suffer more, because suffering unfortunately prepares you for suffering, whereas comfort tends to pamper us and raise our expectations. Morally it's ok to say "look at those poor cholera-ridden haitians", but it's not as if this is news on a country historically ridden by a lack of values, corruption, AIDS etc etc.

Indeed, the U.S. really is a crap hole.

  6. Yeah Steve, and Haiti is a completely problem-free and successful nation on all accounts. Pity all the aid funds it's been giving the US all these years apparently did nothing to improve the fate of american citizens...

  7. Steve, you never cease to annoy with your hyperbole. On what scale is the US a crap hole?
