French mousetrap, 1860

Source.

A tip of the hat to LeadPipe for entering the French text into a translator to come up with this approximation of the drawing's caption: "This terrible show(entertainment) has to teach wolverines(gluttons) to put in their pleasures a little of caution at table as at the bed in the bed as è the dance, if they dread the fate(spell) of these poor young rats"

  1. I don't read French... can anyone translate?
This seems like a joke, it can't be real, surely?

  2. Automatic translation:
This terrible show(entertainment) has to teach wolverines(gluttons) to put in their pleasures a little of caution at table as at the bed in the bed as è the dance, if they dread the fate(spell) of these poor young rats

  3. It seems plausible enough to me. Once that spring is released... there could be enough force there to break a rat neck or crush a windpipe.
