U.S. ready to seize Pakistan's nuclear weapons

"Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh says the US has a rapid response unit ready to secure Pakistan's nuclear weapons in the event of a mutiny or "any nuclear incident", a claim the US and Pakistani governments have denied.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Hersh discussed his report which appeared in The New Yorker magazine and said a team was scrambled recently to respond to what was thought to be a nuclear emergency in Pakistan, which turned out to be a false alarm."

Not surprising, really. As Hersh says, "It's just something that nobody can talk about publicly."

  1. The U.S. also has plans in case Canada invades the country. Or England. Or Mexico. Or Cuba.

It's called contingency planning. Staff and intelligence officers are assigned these tasks, in part to keep them busy, but also to uncover any problems in deployment, equipment or tactics that should be corrected. It's one way in which the military ensures that it does its job effectively, and it performs its duties with more skill and professionalism than Sy Hersh does in his.
