Which face is male? Which is female?


The two faces are actually identical in terms of morphology - the shape and position of the facial bones and the features. The only difference between the two is that the one on the left was generated using higher contrast. One implication is that high-contrast faces tend to be interpreted as more feminine than low-contrast faces.

This is one of ten interesting items in a set at Scientific American. The paired faces also placed third in the this year's Best Visual Illusion of the Year Contest. TYWKIWDBI has previously posted the winner and the runner-up.
