Sunshine trailer

I saw this 2007 sci-fi movie last night. It's quite good. The trailer embedded above is disappointingly only a compilation of computer graphics; the power of the movie actually lies in the development of the characters. The basic plot (boosting the output of the sun) sounds (is) a bit ridiculous, but that's just a vehicle for probing ethical dilemnas. Good musical score, and a touch of Dr. Strangelove at the end. On the DVD, the audio commentary by director Danny Boyle ("Trainspotting") is informative.

  1. That was a surprisingly good movie. The acting was well done and even the smaller details, like the solar viewing room, were convincing.

  2. I was told that the "science" was actually only about 10% fiction. I don't have a source for that number, but since I'm not a sci-fi fan, it made it easier to watch.

  3. teresa, You are correct, in that the thermostat is on Mars. That's why bush proposed we go there. Seems he thought we offset the effects of global warming by turning it down a notch.

  4. I've been meaning to watch this for so long, as Michelle Yeoh is one of my favourite actresses...but it just doesn't seem like the type of movie I'd like. I'll hold off for abit longer....

  5. @jojo - I won't try to talk you into it, but I'll offer these suggestions. It's a bit difficult to follow, because as with many films sited in spacecraft, you keep asking "where am I" and "what's going on." Perhaps best to watch not on cable or in a theater, but from a DVD from the library, so you can review scenes or switch over the the director's comments. And it's probably easiest if you ignore the "science" part and focus on the interplay of the characters and the resolution of dilemnas (what do you do when there are 8 people but oxygen enough for only 5, etc). Also, an intoxicating beverage in hand doesn't hurt...

  6. Haha, an intoxicating beverage makes everything seem just that little bit happier! Thanks for the tips, I'll look out for it on DVD sometime in the near future.
