I don't understand "fashion"

I'll admit my ignorance and ask why the pants don't fall (further) down. Are they belted that tightly around the upper thighs, and if so, doesn't that impede ambulation? (photo source unknown)

  1. As an inner-city teacher who detests sagging, I had the great joy of seeing a young man who thought he was too cool for words lose his pants in the middle of an intersection a block from the school. You haven't lived until on of these kids leans over in front of you with his backside in your direction!

  2. Typically those who wear their pants/shorts in this fashion adopt a wider stance while in motion. Standing doesn't seem to be an issue as long as the waist line of the pants/shorts are tight enough. That being said, supposedly the trend of having the waistband below one's rear began in the prison system. Think of it as an advertisement showing others your sexuality. Whether that is true will almost aways remain debatable.

  4. Excellent link. I never thought of looking in Snopes.

There's also a comment there that the pants are kept in place by "constant hitching," which becomes an "integral part of the walking style."
