Public acceptance of evolution

Adults were asked to respond to the statement: “Human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals." The percentage of respondents who believed this to be true is marked in blue; those who believed it to be false, in red; and those who were not sure, in yellow.

The only countries that tend to rank lower than the United States in accepting evolution are Muslim countries (lower graph). Opposition in the Muslim world is not based on any specific passages from the Koran, but on a variety of social/cultural implications.
Because the idea of an ancient Earth is not controversial among Muslims, he is comfortable presenting biological creationism in a universe billions of years old. Instead, the focus of his opposition is on the social and cultural threat posed by evolution in the form of materialism and atheism.
One final gloomy note: over the past 20 years the percentage of American adults accepting the principles of evoluation has declined from 45% to 40%.

  1. Wow, that is sad... Look how far behind the UK we are. I mean, it's scientific fact here. Why do Americans have such a hard time coming to terms with it?

  2. Religion. Catholicism and the Episcopal Church have no problem with evolution. But the evangelical fundamentalists believe the world is less than 6,000 years old and that every word in the bible is true (they never seem to be bothered by the contradictory parts). Remember, GWB was reelected without too much fraud.

  3. How is time + chance (luck) scientific? Evolution contradicts science, for example, the Law of Entropy. The evolutionary theory is only 150 years old (approximately).

  4. The Law of Entropy applies to closed systems (where there is no energy being applied from outside). Life on earth is an open system in that energy is being continually supplied by God through the means of (for example) solar radiation. That energy added to the system overcomes entropy and allows for the creation of more complex systems.
