North American "Car of the Year" is... Korean

The year is off to a great start for Korean automaker Hyundai, which kicked off the Detroit auto show by winning the North American Car of the Year award.

A panel of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada deemed the Genesis the best car sold on the continent...

Hyundai has been selling cars in America for more than 20 years, and only recently has it lived down its reputation for the disposable - some would say crappy - little econoboxes it offered in the 1980s...

The award went to the four-door, five passenger Genesis sedan, a car some have compared favorably to the original Lexus LS, the car that marked Toyota's entry into the luxury car market. The Genesis starts at $37,250.

  1. Congratulations to Hyundai. The way they have turned that company around is remarkable, and American manufacturers should take note.
