The thought-provokiing art of Chris Jordan

I seldom blog about modern art, celebrities, or sports, but today a post at Arbroath led me to the homepage of Chris Jordan. He uses photography - especially collages of images - to depict in visual terms the staggering size of consumer-related data.

The top semi-pointillist depiction of breasts is a 5-foot x 6-foot composite photograph of 32,000 Barbie dolls (detail in lower image). Why 32,000? Because that's the number of women in the United States who undergo breast enhancement surgery -- every month.

Other images in his "Running the Numbers" exhibit:

one million plastic cups, the number used on airline flights in the US every six hours.

two million plastic beverage bottles, the number used in the US every five minutes.

426,000 cell phones, equal to the number of cell phones retired in the US every day.

Browse the images. It's well worth a few seconds of your time.
